MIKKA - MIKKA 'S' by Iannis Xenakis.
MIKKA (dedicated to Mica Salabert) was written for and first performed at a party given by Mme. Francis Salabert in 1972. by early 1975 enough people had asked Xenakis for a longer work for solo violin, and MIKKA 'S' was finished in November 1975. Both works continue Xenakis' exploration of string glissandos, and are his first works for solo violin here performed by Mary Oliver.
is a film about musical displacement featuring chants, love songs and war songs from the Hopi, Navaho, Yurok, and Tolowa Tribes and live violin performance. Filmmaker and Editor - Helen Prince. Sound design - Mary Oliver.
HELEN PRINCE worked for many years as a film editor in San Francisco, new York, Montreal & Toronto. Her film "Trashy Girls" was screened last year in performance at Club Nine and The Lab. She is currently completing , with composer Barbara Golden, "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" a 16mm morality play. Scheduled for performance at SOMAR in June is "Lap Pool" as a part of a show of installations titled Monumental Women.
MARY OLIVER is a violinist/composer who specializes in the performance of New and Avant-Garde music. She has performed and premiered new works by Lou Harrison, Anthony Braxton, Malcolm Goldstein, Larry Polansky, Jin HI Kim, Wendy Reid, Mark Trayle, Maryanne Amacher, Paul Dresher, George Coates and Barbara Golden at Zellerbach Hall, Herbst Theater, Mills College, New Langton Arts, and New Performance Gallery in San Francisco and Inroads and The Music Barge in New York City.
